  • Itinerary

    Day 1 Location: Apia
Talofa! Welcome to Samoa. If you’ve booked an arrival transfer, it will be waiting for you at Apia’s Faleolo Airport. When you arrive at your hotel, you’ll have a welcome meeting at 6 pm over drinks and snacks to meet your local leader and fellow travellers. After, maybe head out for dinner with your group – your leader will be able to show you a great local spot.
    Day 2 Location: Apia
After breakfast this morning, you’ll head out for a guided tour of Apia, starting with the Mulinu’u Peninsula. See a few historical sites here, then carry on to the flea market and maybe pick up a couple of souvenirs or some fruit. See the Mulivai Cathedral, then have lunch at a local cafe. Here, you can often see a demonstration of ‘elei fabric printing – using a stencil to transfer traditional Samoan designs onto fabric. After, you'll head to the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum – the famous Scottish author who made his home on the island. Further up the hill, you’ll see the Baha'i House of Worship – a beautiful temple set among acres of prayer gardens. Tonight, you have free time at your accommodation to relax or head out for dinner.
Day 3 Location: Apia to Savai’i
Board the ferry this morning to your next destination in Samoa, Savai'i – the largest island in the Samoan archipelago. This island also features prominently in Samoa’s history, legends and myths, and you’ll visit a few spots where some of these stories originated. First, stop at the Savai'i Market to wander around the hustle and bustle of daily life, then travel along the South Coast to the Afu Aau Waterfall and the Taga Blowholes. Sit back and relax while enjoying the view of the Samoan villages and colourful gardens as you make your way to your accommodation for the next three nights. You’ll arrive at your hotel rested and ready for a quick dip in the ocean!
    Day 4 Location: Savai’i
After your morning breakfast spread, start your day with a visit to Cape Falealupo – Cape Falealupo – the westernmost point of Savai'i and one of Samoa's most significant cultural and historical sites. Spend half a day exploring the various sites and learning about Samoan legends and culture, including Giant Moso's Footprint, the Ancient Star Mound and Fafā o Sauali'i (Passage of the Afterlife). Return to your accommodation for some relaxation and maybe spend the late afternoon chilling out on the beach. Tonight, maybe grab some dinner at your accommodation or a local restaurant.
    Day 5 Location: Savai’i
Today is a free day on Savai'i to either sit back, relax by the beach and use the resort’s facilities, or choose one of the optional activities on offer: Visit a chocolate maker, enjoy a traditional Samoan fofo (massage) or explore a local village on a guided walk. Your leader will be of assistance to advise of options and point you in the right direction. Tonight maybe just chill out beachside and grab some dinner and drinks over sunset.
Day 6 Location: Savai’i to Lalomanu
Travel along the north coast of Savai'i after breakfast today, with a picnic lunch along the way. You will travel through some of the most beautiful villages in Savai’i, then continue to the Sale’aula Lava Fields to witness the remains of the eruption of Mt Matavanu in 1905, the Virgin’s Grave and the nearby church. Depart from Savai’i on the afternoon ferry and continue to your final accommodation on the coast of Upolu at Lalomanu – voted one of the best beaches in Samoa. Stop for a swim and snorkel along the way at the Giant Clam Sanctuary – home to brain corals, large starfish and a variety of colourful fish. When you arrive at your beachside fales, where there'll be time for a swim, snorkel or a wander along the beach here before dinner tonight.
Day 7 Location: Vavau Village to Lalomanu
You’ll have a bit of free time this morning before departing for your village cultural day. Make sure to bring your lavalava as you'll be met by village chiefs and matais who will hold an ava (welcoming ceremony) at the village. Feast on an array of traditional Samoan foods while the local women's committee and youth share songs and dances with the group. After lunch, soak up some free time on Vavau Beach this afternoon, then return to Lalomanu for dinner tonight. You’ll also be treated to an upbeat cultural show with Fa’ataupati (slap dance) as night falls.
Day 8 Location: Lalomanu to Apia
Today after breakfast, visit a local Samoan Church to watch the service and listen to the beautiful sounds of the local choir. Then, sit down for a traditional To'ona'i lunch (Samoan Sunday feast). After, say goodbye to Lalomanu and head back to Apia for the last night of your trip. On the way, you’ll stop at the Sopoaga Waterfalls to see the cascades and visit the iconic To Sua Trench, where you can take a refreshing swim or just relax and admire the view of the Pacific Ocean. Tonight, you have a free night to celebrate an amazing adventure with your group.
    Day 9 Location: Nadi
This morning, you’ll say goodbye to those leaving the adventure, then take a shared transfer to Apia Airport for your flight to Fiji’s main island – Viti Levu. Transfer from Nadi International Airport to your hotel and settle into your accommodation. You’ll have a second welcome meeting at 6 pm to meet the new travellers joining you for the next leg of your trip. If you arrive early, why not check out the Hindu temple Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami or try the island’s fresh fruits (pomelo, rose apple and soursop) at the Namaka Produce Market.
    Day 10 Location: Pacific Harbour
After breakfast, head south of Nadi to Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park. Here, you’ll take a ranger-guided walk through the dunes, which range in height from 20 to 60 m and have been formed over millions of years. The views from the sand dunes look out to spectacular scenes along the Coral Coast. Archaeologists have found relics of pottery in the national park dating back more than 2600 years and the area is home to an ancient burial site that holds archaeological remains of Fiji’s first inhabitants and earliest settlements. After the hike, head to Bula Coffee for lunch – Fiji’s first coffee producer that uses beans grown and harvested by communities around the island, and part of the Duavata Collective. Take a tour of their farm and processing facility, then taste some of their coffee. Later, make your way to tonight’s accommodation on the coast, where you’ll have a free afternoon to chill out by the pool or on the beach. Settle in – you’re on island time now!
    Day 11 Location: Pacific Harbour
Gear up for an incredible rafting experience in Fiji’s highlands at Upper Navua Gorge. Ride down rapids naturally carved through the island’s volcanic rock landscapes, surrounded by towering gorge walls, dense rainforest and dozens of waterfalls. The combination of the rapids and the surrounding biological diversity makes this Fiji’s best spot for rafting. You’ll stop for a picnic style lunch along the way. After, return to the coast for another night in the beachside surroundings.
    Day 12 Location: Suva
Leave the resort after breakfast and make your way to Fiji’s capital – Suva. When you arrive, you’ll take a walk through Suva’s market and the city centre with a local guide, who will show you the city from a local's perspective. Then, you’ll visit the Fiji Museum, which showcases the early history of the island and is home to artefacts dating back 3700 years. This afternoon, you’ll have some free time to further explore the city from your centrally located hotel.
    Day 13 Location: Nananu-i-Ra
This morning, drive to Nabalesere village, travelling along the Wainibuka River and through several local villages. Nabalesere is nestled in the province of Ra, where you’ll learn another form of greeting – instead of saying ‘bula’ as in other parts of the island, ‘yadra’ is used to say hello here. When you arrive, your local guide will help the group present a sevusevu to the village elders – this ceremonial gift is to gain acceptance into the community, often in the form of a kava root. You'll also have the opportunity to try kava. Then, embark on a hike to the Savulelele Waterfall, which tumbles down from a height of 50 m. After going for a swim, return to the village for a home-cooked lunch hot lemon leaf tea with your village hosts. Then, travel to the coast, where you’ll take a short boat transfer to Nananu-i-Ra Island, your home for the next two nights in a beachside cottage.
    Day 14 Location: Nananu-i-Ra
Soak up island life on Nananu-i-Ra this morning – sunrise is an excellent time to relax on the beach or cool off with a swim in the South Pacific. After breakfast, put on a mask, snorkel and do some underwater exploring with your group, looking for colourful tropical fish. The rest of the day is free for you to spend however you like. Maybe lie back on the sand with a book, take a dip in the ocean or go for a sunset walk along the sand.
    Day 15 Location: Nadi
Wake up to the sound of the waves this morning. After breakfast, say goodbye to your island hosts and return to the mainland for the drive back to Nadi, where you can opt to have lunch in a local cafe (at your own expense). With no further activities planned after lunch, your adventure comes to an end. If you’d like to spend more time in Nadi, just speak to your booking agent ahead of time to organise additional accommodation.

    Group leader

All group trips are accompanied by a group leader or local representative. The aim of the group leader or local representative is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. Intrepid endeavours to provide the services of an experienced group leader or local representative however, due to the seasonality of travel, rare situations may arise where they may be new to a particular region or training other staff. Your group leader or local representative will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, recommend great local eating venues and introduce you to our local friends. While not always being guides in the traditional sense, you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the places visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious, and social aspects. We often support additional local guides who have specialised knowledge of the regions we visit. If you are interested in delving deeper into the local culture at a specific site or location we may be able to recommend an additional local guide service in the main destinations of your trip.

    Safety

TRAVEL ADVISORIES & ALERTS We recommend that you check your government's foreign travel advisory for the latest information about the destination before you travel. You will also need to ensure that your travel insurance covers you for all destinations and activities on your trip. We also recommend saving the phone number for emergency consular assistance for your government’s consulate in the destination/s you’ll be travelling. Links to travel advisories and any current travel alerts for our trips can be found here: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/travel-alerts PERSONAL SAFETY Ensure you have a secure method of carrying your passport, phone, credit cards and cash while travelling such as a money belt. Leave all other high-value items, including jewellery, at home.Use safety deposit boxes at hotels to store your valuables when available and ensure your luggage is lockable. Be aware of the risk of pick-pocketing and petty theft. Exercise caution when walking at night, don’t walk alone and stick to well-lit streets wherever possible. Be vigilant on public transport and look out for your fellow travellers. Take precautions such as carrying your bag in front of you and never leaving personal items unattended. LGBTQIA+ TRAVELLERS Intrepid welcomes all LGBTQIA+ customers on our trips, however we operate in parts of the world that are less accepting. We support LGBTQIA+ customers to travel to these destinations and are committed to ensuring they face no discrimination on any part of the trip we control. We recommend you visit Equaldex (https://www.equaldex.com/) and your government's foreign travel advice for LGBTQIA+ travellers when choosing your trip.

    https://www.intrepidtravel.com/safety-guidelines

CRIME Opportunistic crimes such as theft occur most in urban areas and at night. Be attentive in downtown Suva after dark in particular and don't carry excess cash. POLITICAL UNREST Avoid demonstrations, street rallies and military activity areas. Public protests and events that draw large groups of people can turn violent. SWIMMING Always swim in designated areas and do not swim alone.

CRIME Take care at night, particularly in downtown Apia and harbour-front areas where theft from travellers does occur. WATER SAFETY Beaches are not patrolled in Samoa. Ask your tour leader, accommodation staff or locals about safe areas for swimming. Avoid swimming alone, when the tide is going out or if the sea is rough. Do not dive from rocks near waterfalls or other swimming holes. STRAY DOGS Stray dogs are common in Samoa. Take care around street dogs and do not approach, touch or feed them. TOURS & ACTIVITIES Tour operators do not always follow safety and maintenance standards. When choosing optional activities always ask about and insist on minimum safety requirements and use all safety gear provided such as life jackets. If safety equipment is poorly maintained or not available, choose another operator. Your tour leader can recommend optional activities and providers.

    Communications

Wifi is increasingly widespread in Nadi and Suva. Some hotels may include it as standard but there is often a fee to get online. Vodafone and Digicel are Fiji's mobile-phone carriers. You can buy a SIM card on arrival and top up as you go. , WiFi availability in Samoa is limited and mobile phone service can be very patchy.

    Visas

PASSPORT You’ll need a valid passport to travel internationally and most countries require your passport to have a minimum of 6 months validity, so remember to check the expiry date. We need your passport information to get everything ready for your trip so it’s important that the information on your booking matches your passport exactly. Please take care to provide the correct details. We recommend carrying a copy of the photo page of your passport while travelling and leaving a copy at home with family or friends. VISAS & ENTRY REQUIREMENTS You are responsible for obtaining relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip.  We recommend you check your visa requirements as soon as you have booked your trip. This will ensure you have time to prepare your documents and for your visa application to be processed. You can check the entry requirements for your nationality on your government's foreign travel advisories, consular websites or on our page here:  http://www.intrepidtravel.com/visa-entry-requirements

Travel consciously – this trip works with local operators who are part of the Duavata Collective, focused on sustainable tourism that respects and celebrates local Fijian cultures and environments.

Is this trip right for you

Some of the best scenery in Fiji is found on hikes. So, while this trip doesn't require a high level of fitness, it’s essential that you’re at least moderately fit and able to hike regularly if you want to partake in all activities., There are some water-based activities included in this trip. You will get the most out of this trip if you are a competent and confident swimmer. If you are not so confident, we recommend that you bring a life jacket from home to allow you to still participate safely. All travellers will need to be competent swimmers to take part in the rafting section of this trip., As this trip focuses on visiting less explored parts of Fiji, there is limited beach time on our itinerary. If you are interested in more of a classic Fiji experience, we recommend staying for a few extra days before or after your trip to enjoy the beaches and snorkelling in the Mamanuca or Yasawa Islands, which are a boat ride away from Nadi., Part of travelling with Intrepid means respecting local cultures and sensibilities. Please be aware of cultural considerations when entering and staying in local villages. Your trip leader and local guides will assist you with local etiquette., As we stay in some locations where there are few options for eating out, some meals may be set menus rather than being able to choose from a variety of options., The accommodation for this trip is not at luxury beach resorts, but is at simple, comfortable locally owned accommodation. Hot water may not be consistently available, so you should expect some cold showers. Wi-fi is also not widely accessible, and a local SIM will need to be purchased to have consistent internet access. Some accommodation options have limited numbers of different room types, so not everyone may have the same room style.

    Health

GENERAL HEALTH All travellers need to be in good physical health in order to participate fully on this trip. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell prior to travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements. When selecting your trip please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully and assess your ability to manage and enjoy our style of travel. Please note that if in the assessment of our group leader or local representative a traveller is unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to themselves and/or the rest of the group, we reserve the right to exclude them from all or part of a trip without refund. You should consult your doctor for up-to-date travel health information or for any necessary vaccinations before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements in their original packaging as they may not easily be obtained while travelling. If you are carrying medication, ensure you check your government's foreign travel advice for any local restrictions or requirements.  , HEALTH CARE IN FIJI Medical care standards in Fiji aren't as high as you may be used to back home. Public hospitals and medical facilities may only provide very basic care. Before treating patients, medical facilities generally need proof of insurance and up front deposits. For serious medical issues evacuation may be required.  HEALTH RISKS There have been outbreaks of Leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue, meningococcal disease and measles. Make sure your vaccinations are up to date before travelling and ensure you adequately protect yourself against mosquitoes by using insect repellent and wearing long, loose, light coloured clothing. WATER To protect yourself against illness, drink boiled or bottled water, avoid tap water and ice cubes, as well as raw or undercooked food.  , MEASLES Samoa has experienced a measles epidemic. Make sure your vaccinations are up to date before you travel. INSECT BORNE DISEASES Mosquitoes are active during the day. To protect yourself from bites, make sure you always use insect repellent and wear long, loose, light-coloured clothing

    Food and dietary requirements

MEALS Most villages we visit are fairly self-sufficient and meals generally consist of local produce from the surrounding fields. The women each provide a couple of dishes, and you’ll be able to choose what you would like to eat. Most dishes are vegetarian, but sometimes include fish. In villages, meals are eaten in the traditional way, sitting on the floor with food placed on a long mat or piece of material. Don’t be surprised if you are encouraged to ‘kana vakalevu’ (eat more)! DRINKING WATER Always drink filtered, boiled or water treated with purification tablets if filling water bottles from any source, including taps in lodges and villages. Support vehicles carry a supply of treated water for refilling bottles. Lemon-leaf and lemongrass tea, using boiled water, is in plentiful supply in the villages, and with a bit of sugar added makes for a good energy drink! KAVA Kava is a traditional Pacific region drink made from the roots of the Piper methysticum plant. It is consumed socially and as part of traditional ceremonies and cultural practices throughout the Pacific Islands. In small doses, the effects of kava include muscle relaxation, sleepiness and feelings of wellbeing. We think of its effect as similar to a reverse cup of coffee. In larger quantities, or in combination with alcohol and prescription medications, including anti-depressants it can be dangerous., Travellers with dietary needs should be prepared for very limited options for included meals and many prefer to take some of their own supplies to ensure they have a balanced diet while travelling.

    Money matters

SPENDING MONEY When it comes to spending money on the trip, every traveller is a little different. You know your spending habits better than we do, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals, drinks, shopping, optional activities, and laundry. Make sure you have read the itinerary and inclusions thoroughly so you know what is included in the trip price and what you may need to pay for while travelling., SAMOA The local currency in Samoa is the Tala (dollar) and Sene (cent). Local cash is the only currency accepted in Samoa. Most businesses don’t accept credit card payments. Cash is also required for visiting beaches and other areas owned by villages, where you will often be asked for a customary fee. All major foreign currencies can be exchanged in Samoa. Money exchange services are based at Faleolo International Airport, in the capital city of Apia, and at some major hotels and resorts where limited ATMs can also be found., FIJI The local currency in Fiji is the Fiji dollar (FJD). ATMs are common in urban areas and large resorts. Carry local cash when you travel to villages or remote areas. Some retail outlets will accept credit cards, but not all, and those that do charge a fee of 2 – 5 % on foreign cards., TIPPING Tipping can be an appropriate way to recognise great service when travelling. While it may not be customary in your home country, it is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry across many of our destinations and is greatly appreciated by the people who take care of you during your travels. It is always best to avoid tipping with coins, very small denomination notes, or dirty and ripped notes, as this can be regarded as an insult rather than the goodwill gesture it is intended to be., YOUR GROUP LEADER OR LOCAL REPRESENTATIVE Tipping your group leader or local representative is highly appreciated if you feel they’ve provided outstanding services throughout your trip. The amount is entirely a personal preference; however, as a guideline, the recommended amount is 4-7 USD or EUR per traveller per day (in a currency relevant to your destination). Of course, you are free to tip more or less as you see fit, depending on your perception of service quality and the length and involvement of your group leader or local representative on your trip., CONTINGENCY FUNDS We try to plan for every eventuality, but there are still some things beyond our control. We reserve the right to change an itinerary after departure due to local circumstances or a Force Majeure Event. In such emergency circumstances, the additional cost of any necessary itinerary alterations will be covered by you. We are not responsible for any incidental expenses that may be incurred because of changes to itineraries, including but not limited to visas, vaccinations or non-refundable flights. Make sure you have access to an extra USD 500 for emergencies (e.g. severe weather, natural disasters, civil unrest) or other events that result in unavoidable changes to the itinerary (e.g. transport strikes or cancellations, airport closures). Sometimes these things necessitate last-minute changes to enable our trips to continue to run, and as a result, there may be some extra costs involved. The recommended amount is listed in USD for the relatability of all travellers; however, local currency may be needed once in the country to cover these costs. Please confirm with your leader on Day 1 if you need to carry this in cash, or whether access via card or electronically is sufficient.

    What to take

When hiking your main luggage will be carried in the support vehicles. You will need to carry a day pack with your needs for each day.  We recommend the following items for your trip: - Strong plastic bags or a dry bag to waterproof the contents of your backpack and daypack - Head torch or small hand held torch for when staying in villages (or use the torch on your phone) - Two one-litre water bottles/bladders  - Camera/phone, with a waterproof cover if you plan to take with you when rafting and to protect in rain - Sunglasses/Sunhat/sunscreen - Book, cards or games for downtime  - Light weight, quick-dry towel - Personal medical kit - Blankets and mattresses will be supplied where required during the village stays, but some travellers also prefer to bring their own sleep sheet CLOTHING & FOOTWEAR - At least one set of non-trekking clothes  - A pair of strong, comfortable, worn-in hiking boots (wear these on the plane just in case your bag gets lost - broken-in boots are hard to replace!) - Flip flops/sandals - Reef/river shoes for rafting - Light rain jacket - Warmer long sleeve layers for cooler nights. - Sulu or sarong/wrap (local skirt worn by men and women needed for when entering villages, can also be borrowed or bought locally) - A comfortable wide-brimmed hat with chin-strap or similar, which will survive getting wet regularly and won't blow off - Several changes of socks - Two changes of comfortable walking clothes. These must be strong, lightweight and comfortable when wet. It is important that your shirts should have loose fitting long sleeves that can be rolled up in the shade or down to protect your arms in the sun. Cotton-based fabric is often more comfortable in the heat, though modern high-tech fibres are also excellent. - Swimsuit VALUABLES: Please try to avoid bringing unnecessary valuables, and use your hotel safes to store the bulk of your money, passport, and airline tickets etc when staying there. It’s also a good idea to purchase a money belt or pouch that is easily hidden. We strongly recommend that you photocopy all important documents e.g. air tickets, passport, vaccination certificate, etc. and keep the copies separate from the originals. While not valid, a photocopy makes it very much easier to obtain replacements if necessary. BATTERIES/POWER: Charging of batteries is advised before checking out of your hotel rooms. Please bear in mind there may be some nights were electricity may not be as readily available as you might be used to. Put your phone in flight mode (or put it away). Otherwise a portable power pack is a good option. FOOTWEAR FOR HIKING/TREKKING This tour includes hiking on unsealed paths, with sometimes slippery, muddy and uneven terrain. Please ensure you pack hiking boots or walking shoes that are fully enclosed, have good grip and are comfortable for you to walk in for an entire day (preferably not brand new, as this can lead to blisters). Modern trail running shoes are a great option for Fiji conditions, especially non-waterproof versions as you don't need to worry about wet and cold feet, and these dry quickly.

Refillable water bottle Hat Sunscreen Insect repellent Skin lotion for insect bites Electrolyte/rehydration powder or tablets Swimwear Sarong (or buy the local version, a lavalava, on arrival in Samoa) Quick-drying towel x 2 (for at accommodation where not provided and for water activities) Trekking or reef sandals, or other sturdy comfortable walking shoes Flip flops Light, loose clothing that can easily be worn over swimwear Life jacket if you are not a strong swimmer so you can participate in water activities Snorkelling gear (hire may be possible in some locations, but your own will ensure you don't miss opportunities) Modest clothing (that covers shoulders and knees for women) A nicer outfit if you plan to attend a church service on Sunday

    Climate and seasonal

Fiji enjoys a warm tropical climate year-round, with daytime temperatures typically ranging between 26°C and 31°C. The dry season, from May to October, generally brings lower humidity, cooler evenings and more comfortable conditions for hiking and outdoor activities. The wet season, from November to April, is characterised by higher humidity, brief but heavy tropical downpours and an increased risk of cyclones. Regardless of the season, strong sun and humidity can make activities feel more strenuous, so lightweight clothing, sun protection and staying well hydrated are essential. As some activities on this trip take place outdoors and on the water, weather conditions may occasionally require changes to the itinerary., As a tropical Pacific Island close to the equator, Samoa’s climate is warm and humid all year round, with little variation in temperature but with distinct wet and dry seasons. Samoa’s average daytime air temperature throughout the year ranges from 24 to 30 degrees Celsius. The sea temperature is normally in the low 20s, making it perfect for swimming and snorkelling all year round. In the country’s eastern and south-eastern regions, trade winds arrive most afternoons or early evenings for a cooling effect during the hottest part of the day. Samoa’s dry season is from May to October, making this the most popular time for visitors. The wet season, from November to April, might not bring rain every day, but a raincoat or umbrella is advised for what can be short but intense thunderstorms. Most of the wet season’s rain will fall between December to March, when storms may last for several hours.

To ensure the wellbeing of everyone on the trip, decisions made by your group leader are final. Romantic relationships between travellers and group leaders or local representatives are not permitted while on trip. Any behaviour that prevents your leader from continuing the itinerary as planned, breaks local laws or opposes any of these guidelines may result in Intrepid denying your booking or removing you from the trip. If something concerns you during your travels, please speak to your group leader immediately. Alternatively, you can contact us on the emergency contact number detailed in the Problems and Emergency Contact Information section of this Essential Trip Information.

    Responsible travel

Our Responsible Travel Policy outlines our commitment to preserving the environment, supporting local communities, protecting the vulnerable, and giving back to the places we travel. All our group leaders and local representatives, suppliers, and staff are trained on these principles and are core to us delivering sustainable, experience-rich travel. Explore the different parts of our Responsible Travel Policy by visiting: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/responsible-travel, Fijian communities are known for their warm hospitality, and showing respect for local customs helps create meaningful connections. When visiting villages, dress modestly, follow your leader’s guidance on local etiquette and always ask permission before taking photographs of people. Many of the experiences on this trip are operated by or in partnership with local communities, helping tourism benefits remain in the places you visit. You can also support local families by purchasing locally made products and minimising your environmental impact by reducing single-use plastics, conserving water and respecting wildlife and natural areas. Small actions can help preserve Fiji’s culture, environment and way of life for future generations.

    The Intrepid Foundation

Our non-profit, The Intrepid Foundation, gives travellers more opportunities to make a positive impact in the places they visit. Accommodation notes

COMMUNITY ACCOMMODATION The villages you will visit all have a community hall which is made available for our use. Some villages also have traditional bures (wood & straw huts) available for guests. In villages, sleeping is on mattresses laid on top of soft traditional mats on the floor. Sleeping spaces in bures or community halls are shared by all guests on the trip together. There are flush toilets and cold water showers in the villages. Some villages may have guest lodge accommodation that are furnished with beds, tables, and chairs., We stay in simple accommodation throughout our time in Samoa. Hot water supply at some properties may be sporadic, so expect some cold showers.

    Transport notes

SUPPORT VEHICLE A support vehicle will follow or meet the group during hikes and will carry your main luggage as well as extra water supplies.

    Travel insurance

https://www.intrepidtravel.com/booking-resources/our-services, Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips for those travelling internationally. We require that, at a minimum, you are covered for medical expenses, including emergency repatriation. If you are travelling within your home country or region, please confirm before travel that you are entitled to access the public medical system easily should an accident occur. We strongly recommend all travellers have a policy that also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects. For international trips, you will not be permitted to join the group until evidence of travel insurance and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number has been sighted by your group leader or local representative. If you have credit card insurance, your group leader or local representative will require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number, and emergency contact number, rather than the bank's name and your credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details prior to arriving in-country. For travellers who reside within the European Union, Switzerland or the USA, the requirement to purchase travel insurance cannot be compulsory. However, the purchase of travel insurance is still highly recommended, and each country you visit may have its own specific entry requirements. For example, some mandate travel health insurance for all foreign travellers, regardless of their nationality. Travellers from the European Union, Switzerland or the USA who decline travel insurance when travelling outside their home region must sign a Travel Insurance Waiver Form at the Group Meeting, recognizing personal responsibility for emergency medical and repatriation costs should they arise. Your fellow travellers

As you travel on a group trip you will be exposed to all the pleasures and maybe some of the frustrations of travelling in a group. Your fellow travellers will probably come from all corners of the world and likely a range of age groups too. We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group - patience with your fellow travellers is sometimes required for the benefit of everyone's travel experience. Remember too that you have responsibilities to the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, ensure that you don't keep the rest of the group waiting. We have found time and time again that the very best trips we operate are those where the dynamics within the group work well - this takes just a little effort on your part. Due to privacy reasons, we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow travellers booked on your trip prior to departure., SOLO TRAVELLERS On our trips, rooming is organised on a twin-share basis. We pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender, as per the gender marker on each of their passports. We also offer an optional single supplement on most trips for travellers who prefer to have their own room. This only applies to accommodation during the tour. Pre-trip and post-trip accommodation booked through us will always be on a single-room basis. On a small selection of trips some accommodation will be open-gender and multishare, such as a felucca in Egypt or an overnight train in Vietnam. Please review the Accommodation section of the Essential Trip Information for details about your trip. LGBTQIA+ TRAVELLERS We strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. If your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.
