  • Itinerary

    Day 1 Location: Taipei
Huan ying! Welcome to Taipei. Your adventure begins in the bustling capital of Taiwan with a welcome meeting at 5 pm. If you arrive early, maybe visit the hot springs at Yangmingshan National Park. After the meeting, head out with your group to visit the night market and have dinner together to kick off the adventure.
    Day 2 Location: Taipei
This morning, you’ll join a fun, hands-on culinary journey to create three beloved Taiwanese classics from scratch. First, you’ll learn the art of dumpling folding, carefully sealing flavourful broth inside each xiao long bao (soup dumpling). Then, explore the depth of Taiwanese comfort food by preparing a fragrant beef noodle soup from broth to bowl. To complete the experience, shake, mix and customise your own bubble (boba) tea in the country of its birth! Find the perfect balance of tea, milk, sweetness and chewy tapioca pearls that makes this kid favourite so addictive. After lunch, you’ll join a storytelling session with local elders – this experience is held by the social enterprise organisation, Rock YeNai (Rock Grandpa/Grandma), which trains seniors to become professional picture book storytellers, evolving into cultural ambassadors.
    Day 3 Location: Taipei
Today, you’ll take a daytrip to Shifen and Jiufen. In Shifen, you can browse the souvenir shops and snack stalls squeezed along the railway. Unlike a traditional closed market, the street intersects the Pingxi Line train, making for an excellent photo opportunity as the train parts the crowd. Look up, so you don’t miss the impressive sight of the many sky lanterns filling the sky! Then, visit the Shifen waterfall, also known as ‘Taiwan’s Niagara Falls.’ Strolling along the trail, you can admire the cascade up close and feel the refreshing coolness from the mist. Next is Jiufen, often referred to as the inspiration for the Japanese anime film Spirited Away, with its red lantern tea houses set against a mountainous backdrop. Explore the iconic Old Street and smaller laneways filled with snacks and stalls before heading back to Taipei for the night.
Day 4 Location: Sun Moon Lake
Today, you’ll move on to Sun Moon Lake, stopping in a small rural township to immerse yourself in the culture of the Indigenous Meixi Tribe. Try your hand at traditional Seediq hunting techniques and learn about the skills passed down through generations. Get creative in a DIY workshop where you’ll make the Seediq’s beloved banana millet cake – because it’s easy to preserve and carry, this cake was a common snack for men going out to work or hunt. The sweet, sticky flavours of millet and banana also represent family togetherness and cohesion. Later, continue to your guesthouse, where you’ll spend the next two nights.
Day 5 Location: Sun Moon Lake
This morning, take a leisurely bike ride around Sun Moon Lake. The round-the-lake track has attracted cyclists from all over the world and has been nominated as one of the most breathtaking cycle paths by CNN! After, experience the art of traditional papermaking at the Suho Paper Memorial Museum. Kids can admire delicate paper artworks while learning about the history and process of handmade paper. During the workshop, you’ll also create your own handmade paper fan using traditional techniques – perfect to keep you cool on the rest of the trip and take home as a souvenir. Tonight, tuck into a share-style, chef’s-choice menu in a century-old traditional courtyard house, surrounded by forest. Try some traditional home-style dishes lovingly prepared, as if by family.
    Day 6 Location: Kenting
Travel from the Nantou region to Kenting. When you arrive, you’ll visit the Kenting National Forest Recreation Area – a world-class ‘high coral reef’ landscape with stunning limestone caves and ancient tropical forests that resemble a natural open-air museum. The park offers well-paved, gentle paths and an elevator at the Sea View Tower, allowing you to enjoy 360-degree ocean views without climbing any stairs. Soak up the peaceful ‘forest bath’ filled with fresh air, exotic tropical plants and frequent sightings of Formosan macaques.
    Day 7 Location: Kenting
Today is a free day for you to relax and enjoy as you like. This morning, you might like to check out Baishawan Beach – one of the best beaches in Taiwan. This bay, renowned for its white sandy beach, is less developed compared to other beaches in Kenting, offering a more tranquil environment. Spend the rest of the day however you like – maybe explore the town, take on some water sports or ask your leader for their best recommendations based on your interests.
    Day 8 Location: Xiaoliuqiu
This morning, travel to Xiaoliuqiu (Lambai Island) – Taiwan’s only coral island, just a short ferry ride off the coast. Renowned for its laid-back tropical vibe and year-round warm waters, it’s world-famous for its massive resident population of green sea turtles. Don your mask, then get out snorkelling with these magnificent creatures and spot an abundance of other marine life. Later today, when the tide is low, you’ll have the option to join an intertidal zone guided tour – a fantastic opportunity to safely observe marine life like sea urchins, starfish and hermit crabs in shallow, exposed reef pools.
    Day 9 Location: Taipei
This morning, you’ll have some free time on the island to perhaps go snorkelling again or rent a transparent kayak to paddle out and see turtles from above the water. There’s also an option to explore geographical formations on some short hikes through coral caves, or swim in one of the many sandy coves. Then it’s time to ferry back to the mainland and take a fast train back to Taipei for your final night. The high-speed rail is one of the world’s fastest at an average speed of about 300 km per hour (186 m). Tonight, visit the Din Tai Fung restaurant for a delicious feast of xiao long bao (soup dumplings) and share your favourite memories of your trip with your fellow families.
    Day 10 Location: Taipei
Your trip comes to an end after breakfast. With no activities planned for the day, you’re free to leave the hotel any time after checkout. If you want to extend your stay, just speak to your booking agent ahead of time.

The aim of the group leader or local representative is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. Intrepid endeavours to provide the services of an experienced group leader or local representative however, due to the seasonality of travel, rare situations may arise where they may be new to a particular region or training other staff. Your group leader or local representative will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, recommend great local eating venues and introduce you to our local friends. While not always being guides in the traditional sense, you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the places visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious, and social aspects. We often support additional local guides who have specialised knowledge of the regions we visit. If you are interested in delving deeper into the local culture at a specific site or location we may be able to recommend an additional local guide service in the main destinations of your trip.

    Health

GENERAL HEALTH All travellers need to be in good physical health in order to participate fully on this trip. For the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others, if you are unwell prior to travelling, please stay at home and contact us to make alternative arrangements. When selecting your trip please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully and assess your ability to manage and enjoy our style of travel. Please note that if in the assessment of our group leader or local representative a traveller is unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to themselves and/or the rest of the group, we reserve the right to exclude them from all or part of a trip without refund. You should consult your doctor for up-to-date travel health information or for any necessary vaccinations before departure. We recommend that you carry a first aid kit as well as any personal medical requirements in their original packaging as they may not easily be obtained while travelling. If you are carrying medication, ensure you check your government's foreign travel advice for any local restrictions or requirements.  , PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE: Some prescription medications are illegal in Taiwan. You can be jailed or fined if you have these medications. Before you travel, check the Taiwan Customs website for allowances, limitations and documentation requirements: https://eweb.customs.gov.tw/ Consult your doctor about alternatives well in advance of travel. Take legal prescription medicine with you so you remain in good health. Always carry a copy of your prescription or a letter from your doctor stating what the medicine is, how much you'll take and that it's for personal use only. MOSQUITO-BORNE DISEASES: Dengue fever has been known to occur especially in the tropical southern and central regions. Cases of Zika virus were reported in 2016. Protect yourself against mosquito-borne illnesses by ensuring your accommodation is mosquito proof, taking measures to avoid insect bites, including always using insect repellent and wearing long, loose fitting, light coloured clothing. HAND, FOOT & MOUTH DISEASE: Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is common, with more serious outbreaks occurring occasionally. Outbreaks usually start in March or April and peak in May but can continue until August to October each year. It mostly affects children under the age of 10 years but adult cases (particularly young adults) occur. The illness is characterised by fever as well as blisters and rashes on the hands, feet and buttocks. HFMD is spread by direct contact with nose and throat discharges and faeces of infected people. Take usual hygiene precautions, including careful and frequent hand washing and seek medical advice if unwell.

    Food and dietary requirements

While travelling with us you and your family experience the vast array of wonderful food available in the world. Your group leader will be able to suggest restaurants to try during your trip. Please ensure you tell them of any dietary requirements you and your family may have. We know children can be fussy eaters at times so we do recommend you bring any snacks from home to have throughout the trip. To give you the maximum flexibility in deciding where, what and with whom to eat, generally not all meals are included in the trip price. This also gives you more budgeting flexibility. As a rule our groups tend to eat together to enable you and your family to taste a larger variety of dishes and enjoy each other's company. There's no obligation to do this though., Taiwan has some of the best food in Asia, including a fantastic street food scene. Vegetarians and vegans are not difficult to cater for. Here are some links to get you excited about what you might eat while in Taiwan: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/adventures/taiwan-food-guide/ https://www.intrepidtravel.com/adventures/taiwan-food/

    Money matters

SPENDING MONEY When it comes to spending money on the trip, every traveller is a little different. You know your spending habits better than we do, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals, drinks, shopping, optional activities, and laundry. Make sure you have read the itinerary and inclusions thoroughly so you know what is included in the trip price and what you may need to pay for while travelling., TAIWAN The currency of Taiwan is the New Taiwan Dollar (NTD). ATMs are widely available in both cities and provincial centres. International credit cards are usually accepted in hotels, restaurants and higher-end shops, particularly in cities and larger towns. , TIPPING Tipping can be an appropriate way to recognise great service when travelling. While it may not be customary in your home country, it is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry across many of our destinations and is greatly appreciated by the people who take care of you during your travels. It is always best to avoid tipping with coins, very small denomination notes, or dirty and ripped notes, as this can be regarded as an insult rather than the goodwill gesture it is intended to be., YOUR GROUP LEADER OR LOCAL REPRESENTATIVE Tipping your group leader or local representative is highly appreciated if you feel they’ve provided outstanding services throughout your trip. The amount is entirely a personal preference; however, as a guideline, the recommended amount is 4-7 USD or EUR per traveller per day (in a currency relevant to your destination). Of course, you are free to tip more or less as you see fit, depending on your perception of service quality and the length and involvement of your group leader or local representative on your trip., YOUR DRIVERS You may have a range of drivers on your trip. Some may be with you for a short journey, while others may be with you for several days. We recommend tipping your drivers USD 2 – 4 per person per day (in a currency relevant to your destination)., CONTINGENCY FUNDS We try to plan for every eventuality, but there are still some things beyond our control. We reserve the right to change an itinerary after departure due to local circumstances or a Force Majeure Event. In such emergency circumstances, the additional cost of any necessary itinerary alterations will be covered by you. We are not responsible for any incidental expenses that may be incurred because of changes to itineraries, including but not limited to visas, vaccinations or non-refundable flights. Make sure you have access to an extra USD 500 for emergencies (e.g. severe weather, natural disasters, civil unrest) or other events that result in unavoidable changes to the itinerary (e.g. transport strikes or cancellations, airport closures). Sometimes these things necessitate last-minute changes to enable our trips to continue to run, and as a result, there may be some extra costs involved. The recommended amount is listed in USD for the relatability of all travellers; however, local currency may be needed once in the country to cover these costs. Please confirm with your leader on Day 1 if you need to carry this in cash, or whether access via card or electronically is sufficient.

    What to take

Additional items for Taiwan: - Waterproof jacket. - Good walking shoes with grip. - Swimming attire and cap (if visiting Yilan hot springs) - Lightweight rain protection. - Shoes suitable for muddy clam-picking activity (if included) - Insect repellent is strongly recommended, particularly when travelling in southern Taiwan and coastal areas. Please note that accommodation in Taiwan will not provide single use items in the bathroom so please bring your own toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, razor, shaving cream, or shower caps. Or you will be able to purchase these in local convenience stores.

Remember - the lighter you travel the better! A soft-sided duffel or sausage bag is the ideal form of luggage. It is recommended that you keep your luggage weight around 15kg and certainly no more than 20kg. A small or medium-sized backpack (45-50 litres) is another good option, but preferably one without a frame. When you pack your clothing, consider the climate at the time of year you are travelling and any specific requirements for your trip as at certain times of the year some of the items suggested in the list that follow may not be necessary. Keep in mind that the weather will vary significantly from place to place. Laundry facilities are available in some destinations. Climate and seasonal

Taiwan has a subtropical to tropical climate with warm temperatures and humidity throughout much of the year. Summers (May to September) are typically hot, humid and wet, while winters (December to February) are generally mild, although temperatures can be noticeably cooler in mountain regions such as Alishan. Rain is possible year-round, particularly in the northeast. TYPHOONS: Taiwan experiences typhoons, particularly during the wet season from May to November. Flooding, landslides and transport disruptions can occur, and the direction and strength of typhoons can change with little warning. Flights may be delayed or cancelled, businesses and attractions may close, and local authorities may declare a 'typhoon day' at short notice. As a result, itinerary changes may occasionally be necessary. We recommend packing lightweight clothing, comfortable walking shoes and suitable wet weather protection regardless of travel season. Information on typhoons and severe weather is available from the Taiwan Central Weather Administration (CWA): https://www.cwa.gov.tw/V8/E/P/Typhoon/TY_NEWS.html.

Take a closer look at our animal welfare policy (https://www.intrepidtravel.com/sites/intrepid/files/Intrepid_Travel_Animal_Welfare_Policy.pdf) to learn more about how we champion responsible, cruelty-free experiences on our trips, and see how you can help make a difference when you travel with our animal-friendly travel tips (https://www.intrepidtravel.com/en/how-be-better-traveller-wildlife).

    The Intrepid Foundation

Our non-profit, The Intrepid Foundation, gives travellers more opportunities to make a positive impact in the places they visit. We have over 50 Intrepid Foundation partners across the globe addressing four key focus areas: protecting the environment, taking a stand for wildlife, addressing inequality and empowering communities. Intrepid matches all post-trip donations dollar for dollar and takes care of the admin fees – this doubles your impact and ensures every cent goes to our partners on the ground. Accommodation notes

GENERAL ROOMING CONFIGURATIONS: Family of two: All family groupings of two will be accommodated in a twin room. Family of three: Wherever possible we will put you in a triple room. Please be aware that in some places triple rooms are in short supply so you may have an extra bed added to a twin room or be allocated a twin + single room. Rest assured, children will always be allocated a room with a parent or guardian. Family of four or more: You will most likely be accommodated in two twin rooms. Where possible, we will accommodate your family in a quadruple room. While we do our very best to ensure that family groups are roomed close together (in some cases, we can arrange adjoining rooms), we can’t guarantee this. Most family holidays occur during peak season and we sometimes have little to no control over the exact placement of rooms within a hotel. Please be understanding if we are unable to room your family in immediate proximity of one another.

    Travel insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips for those travelling internationally. We require that, at a minimum, you are covered for medical expenses, including emergency repatriation. If you are travelling within your home country or region, please confirm before travel that you are entitled to access the public medical system easily should an accident occur. We strongly recommend all travellers have a policy that also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects. For international trips, you will not be permitted to join the group until evidence of travel insurance and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number has been sighted by your group leader or local representative. If you have credit card insurance, your group leader or local representative will require details of the participating insurer/underwriter, the level of coverage, policy number, and emergency contact number, rather than the bank's name and your credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details prior to arriving in-country. For travellers who reside within the European Union, Switzerland or the USA, the requirement to purchase travel insurance cannot be compulsory. However, the purchase of travel insurance is still highly recommended, and each country you visit may have its own specific entry requirements. For example, some mandate travel health insurance for all foreign travellers, regardless of their nationality. Travellers from the European Union, Switzerland or the USA who decline travel insurance when travelling outside their home region must sign a Travel Insurance Waiver Form at the Group Meeting, recognizing personal responsibility for emergency medical and repatriation costs should they arise. Your fellow travellers

As you and your family travel on a group trip you will be exposed to all the pleasures and maybe some of the frustrations of travelling in a group. Your fellow families will probably come from all corners of the world and likely a range of age groups too (for both parents and children). We ask you to be understanding of the various needs and preferences of your group. Patience with other families in the group is sometimes required for the benefit of everyone's travel experience. Remember too that you and your family have responsibilities to the group. If you are requested to be at a place at a certain time, ensure that you don't keep the rest of the group waiting. We have found time and time again that the very best trips we operate are those where the dynamics within the group work well - this takes just a little effort on your part. Due to privacy reasons we are unable to provide you with contact details and any personal information about your fellow families booked on your trip prior to departure.

    Itinerary disclaimer

ITINERARY CHANGES Our itineraries are updated regularly throughout the year based on customer feedback and to reflect the current situation in each destination. The information included in this Essential Trip Information may therefore differ from when you first booked your trip. It's important that you review this information prior to travel so that you have the latest updates. Due to weather, local conditions, transport schedules, public holidays, political unrest or other factors, further changes may be necessary to your itinerary once in-country. Your group leader or local representative will keep you up to date with any such changes once your trip is underway and has the authority to amend or cancel any part of the trip itinerary if deemed necessary due to safety concerns. , OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES A selection of optional activities that have been popular with past travellers are listed in the day-to-day itinerary. This isn't an exhaustive list and should be used as a guide only for some of what might be available. Prices are approximate, are for entrance fees only, and don’t include transport to and from the sites or local guides unless indicated. All activities are subject to availability, and may be on a join-in basis. It may not be possible to do all the activities listed in the time available at each destination, so some pre-planning for what you are most interested in is advised. When it's recommended that travellers pre-book these activities, look for a note in the Special Information section of the day-to-day itinerary. For most, they can either be organised independently on the day, or let your group leader or local representative know you are interested at the Welcome Meeting and they can assist. Where activities are considered medium or high risk, we work with operators whose safety and credentials we have sighted and assessed. Although it is possible that you may find the same activity cheaper with another operator on the ground, we cannot vouch for the safety or quality of that operator. Medium and high-risk activities not listed above have not been assessed by us and as such our staff and group leader or local representative are unable to assist you with organising these activities. Activities that contravene our Responsible Travel policies are also not listed. Please remember that the decision to partake in any activity not listed is at your own discretion and risk.
