Musical Roots of the South Self Drive Itinerary (4 stars)

This road trip travels through eight states: Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia and South Carolina. It starts in Dallas (Deep Ellum’s live music venues), then heads through Austin, “Live Music Capital of the World”, home to Sixth Street and Rainey Street, and on via San Antonio to Houston. From there it follows the Gulf Coast through Port Arthur and Lafayette, Louisiana’s Cajun Country, to New Orleans for traditional jazz at Preservation Hall and live music along Frenchmen Street. The route then follows the Mississippi Blues Trail north through Baton Rouge and Natchez to Indianola, home of the B.B. King Museum, before stopping at Dockery Farms and Elvis Presley’s birthplace in Tupelo. Birmingham’s Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame comes next, then Chattanooga (Songbirds Guitar Museum) and Gatlinburg, with a stop at Dollywood. The itinerary finishes by crossing Great Smoky Mountains National Park to Atlanta (Little Five Points) and ending in Charleston, South Carolina, with its pastel antebellum homes and historic waterfront.
